The social setting Essay Example for Free

The social setting Essay KES is set in the early 1960s in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and in the first few pages we get the impression that Billy and his family live on a deprived estate. There are many signs of this throughout the novel and one of the first things we read about is that Billy and his brother not only share a bedroom but also share the bed itself. He stayed in his own half of the bed, groaning and turning The bedroom window didnt even have any curtains at it. There was obviously no central heating as Billy was very cold when he got up and had to prepare and light a coal fire. Unlike most homes today there was not much food in the house what food there was, was kept in a pantry rather than a fridge; fridges were not commonplace objects in the homes of ordinary people in the 60s. the floor covering is another clue to depravation; it was not covered in carpet but lino. The family had not got much regard for their home. One example of this is the mother cleaning her shoes on the edge of the tablecloth. So as a conclusion to the historical setting we can tell that Billy lives in a time where life wasnt as easy and things we take for granted like central heating, electricity and hot water werent so widely available. Only the rich people had the luxuries like hot water and Billy certainly didnt live in an area, which had any such comforts, his family was poor and its easy see it when reading the novel. The social setting of the novel is mainly his school. He obviously goes to an all boys secondary modern, where discipline is maintained by the headmasters cane and the boys are called by their surnames. The class still have old-fashioned inkwells and blotters at their desks. It would seem that the system has failed Billy if he not competent at reading and writing by the time he is in his last year at school. Though the lack of support by his mother may have something to do with it, Id presume that Billy had been left to get on with school himself with no help from his mother or Jud. So living in a poor, deprived area and having a bad relationship with his mother and brother, Billy was not given the opportunity to succeed in life. The first incident I have chosen is the opening scenes in the novel. It shows Billys morning routine, getting up, getting dressed and going off to do his paper round. I have chosen to examine this scene because I think it starts to make the reader feel sympathetic towards Billy and understand his situation. This is shown throughout the novel, but the opening scenes give the reader a taste of whats to come. The short opening paragraph is deliberately harsh. Hines engages the reader immediately with his stark description of the bedroom, which begins There was no curtains up. This is a short but powerful sentence, as is Silence. which ends this paragraph and makes the reader wonder what is going to break it. The powerful verbs such as shivered, scuffled and crawled all help to intensify the mood of the opening. Hines narrative is extremely descriptive and heightens the readers awareness of Billys poor living conditions and the depressing area in which he lives. The positive descriptions e. g. The coal had caught fire, and the yellow flames were now emitting a slight warmth. are always followed with lengthy negative descriptions e. g. grabbed his windcheater. The zip was broken and the material draped out behind him The effect of this is to keep the reader sympathising with Billy. The conversations that take place between Billy and his brother, the shopkeeper and the milkman all include local dialect, which suggest the working class background. The first character to be met is Billys brother Jud when they are both in bed; Jud is one of the rounded characters in the novel. We can tell from reading the second paragraph that Billy and Jud have to share a bed, which shows us that the family are not very well off at all. We can also tell that Jud does not like Billy; he was no respect for him whatsoever and seems to take every opportunity to bully him: thumped Billy in the kidneys. The conversation between Jud and Billy in this scene is made up of short phrases in which neither character is particularly polite but Jud speaks very rudely to Billy even when Billy is only trying to prevent him being late for work. This evokes empathy within the reader for Billy. This poor relationship is shown many times throughout the novel making us feel more sympathetic towards Billy. We also meet the shopkeeper in the first few scenes when Billy goes to do his paper round. When Billy arrives at the shop they have a conversation about how Billy was nearly late and how theres a long queue of people for his job, people from Firs Hill. The reference to Firs Hill is telling us that the Estate that Billy lives on is very poor and rundown and that the people living at Firs Hill are regarded as more important. theyre all alike off that estate. Theyll take your breath if youre not careful. These are the words that customers had used to the shopkeeper to imply that all the people from Billys estate are thieves and certainly not to be trusted The next character we meet is the milkman, who, like the shopkeeper, is one of the flat characters in the novel. Third class ridings better than first class walking anyday. The milkman tells Billy when they meet each other on Billys paper round. After talking to the milkman for a while Billy nicks a bottle of milk off the back of the float. On the step stood two empty milk bottles. This is the reason why Billy nicked the bottle of milk; he had nothing left at home which shows us that neither his mother nor Jud thought to save some milk for Billy. In the same description on the first few pages we see that Billy is left no food either. There were a packet of dried peas and a half bottle of vinegar on the shelves. The bread bin was empty. There is a general feeling throughout the opening that Billy is very much a neglected child. When watching the film version of the novel there are some aspects of it which make us feel more sympathetic towards Billy and some things that are not shown in as much detail as the novel. The sound and lighting are very important mediums in the opening scene, when watching the film you get a better feel for the darkness of the room and the size of the bed that Billy and Jud have to share. It starts off in complete silence until the alarm clock goes off which seems to act a signal for the bickering between Billy and Jud to begin. The camera shows the view of the bed so we can see both characters as they have their conversation of pronounced limited dialogue. Then there is a sudden shock of light shown with a mid-shot as Jud gets up and presses the light switch. This dramatic change between dark and light and a point of view shot seems to leave Billy looking vulnerable tucked up beneath the tattered covers. As Billy gets up to get dressed into his dirty clothes we hear a soft sound of a recorder in the background, and the only light is that coming from the window. The film misses out the scene when Billy is looking for food in the kitchen and lighting the fire, and proceeds to the scene outside. In this scene we see Billy running down the street from a mid-shot and then a wide-shot as he runs across the field.

Effects of Dota

Computer Game Addiction â€Å"Responsible gaming is an attitude we need if we are engage into Computer Game. Developing this attitude is not a personal choice alone, it requires the participation of society (parents, school, game developer and government). â€Å" As a computer game user, player and fan, it has led me to study the effects of playing computer games such as DOTA, KHAN, and other highly innovative and competitively graphical games. The purpose of the study was to establish an understanding of to what extent is the effect of playing online games, network games and other types to the studies of the students in the university where I graduated. While it was difficult to set a parameter of classifying games according to types and quality since I and my friend believed that the characteristics of the games have something to do with the addiction of students to playing, we thought that it would be safe to just assume games as if have the same characteristics even though these games are under of different types and of the different level of complex graphical presentation, level of real-time experiences, the plot of story it is trying to project and a lot more qualities. Thus, if we quantify the effects then assumption holds that each game that we have studied has a relatively the same impact to students considering its character/quality. However, the extent of its impact is relatively different when we talk about the degree of variation to students experiences towards gaming. This shows therefore that in studying game addiction, it requires a rigid classification and parameter identification to clearly qualify and quantify the impact of this activity to the life of students and Human in general. I encountered several unique experiences when we did the study, and it has given me knowledge on the magnitude of effects whether it is health, study, social, and family and even money issues. One of result says that female players is exactly the same compared to male players when it comes the time of engagement to games. This means that women has started playing games as early as 4 years old as the time of engagement of men revealed, and they women also spent closely 5 to 8 hrs on the average everyday just like men does. † The proceeding discussion will talk about the games, the different types of game and the hundreds available game in the market. Posted on Tuesday, 17. 02. 09 @ 10:55 PM Effects of DoTA It is a kind of neither a game that excites the students to play because of the new updates that come across that game, Data can be an online game nor a local game, can be played by group. This is a kind of character game, means that they're aiming a good character. This is a bloody game on computer. There are many students and even some young professional are addicted to Defense of the Ancients or Data. This is a kind of computer games that can be played by many players and is one of the most popular games to young students. Many students get addicted to this game and they even long hours inside the computer shop Just playing this kind of game. There are studies that getting addicted in playing computer games affects their studies and this is the cause why hey are lying to their parents that they need extra money for their school project but the truth is they are Just using the money to rent a computer where they can play Data with their classmates.Sometimes in order to make the game exciting, they have a deal to pay those who won the game so it becomes already a form of gambling. When time spent on the computer, playing Data games or cruising the internet reaches a point that it harms a child's or adult's family and social relationships, or disrupts school or work life, that person maybe caught in a cycle of addiction. Like there addictions, Data game has replaced friends and family as the source of a person, emotional life.Increasingly, to feel good, the addicted person spends more time playing video games or searching the internet. When a person spends up to ten hours a day or more rearranging or sending files, playing games, surfing the net, visiting chat rooms, instant messaging, and reading emails. That easily can reach up to seventy to eighty hours a week online with the computer. Major social, school or work disruptions will result.Description of Researcher's Role In this study we had many roles to be tag along and to be acted upon depending n the situa tion. In our research we, the researchers are the instruments. We interact and collaborate with our respondents and gathers data by ourselves. However, in quantitative research, we are non-existent we use instruments to collect data and do not interact with our respondents. These roles and their accompanying broadly stated problems for deliberation are suitable to the Collaborative Research Model in mind.We the researcher's of this case applied these roles: We conducted interviews on our respondents: Data players/addicts Researched some information's in the internet regarding in our case Read books in the library for the aromas Joint our opinions with regards to the topic We considered our limitations in conducting the interview Conclusion After gathering information during our interview and analyzing the information on the case of the effects of Data, we therefore conclude that this Data game has a great effect to the person who are playing on it and come to an end of addiction. The player of this game doesn't matter with their ages and status. From the young to adults Data is the game that is mostly played. It also leads the players to make risky behavior that tends Data players forget their obligations and also their personal Hygiene. Data also complicates relationship on family, friends and special someone. As a whole Data can change the lives of the people who used to play this game. Schematic Diagram Body Data Origin DATA was originally created by a legendary mapmaker called Just by his alias â€Å"Lull† (hence the item Eel's Scepter of Divinity) on of Warrant Ill : Reign of Chaos World Editor.Upon the release of the Frozen Throne expansion, Lull failed to update his map and generous enough to let others develop the map into what we known today as DATA Alistair by another mapmaker called â€Å"Guising† (hence also the item Guising). With the great features of World Editor, DATA maps was even more creatively developed in the 6. X versions by today's DATA Alistair main programmer called â€Å"Iceberg†. Until today, Iceberg declares official map editions of DATA even though many other World Editor mapmakers edit DATA maps in subtle different ways.World Editor is a JOSS-Asynchronous Scripting Syntax)-based application software used to create and edit AD game maps in Blizzard ‘s Warrant Ill. The mapmaker can custom the game through existing virtual palette for units, buildings structures, terrains, sectors, and cameras views. There is also an added pallet imported from Statecraft map editor called doodads (for waters, trees, bushes, boulders, skeletons, fire pits, and others). SASS programmers can specify triggers on how units respond to specific events in the game. These triggers are the building blocks of Data's gamesman. It is the reason why neutral units would retaliate when being attacked and all surrounding enemy units to attack Axe when he pumped the berserker call skill. Any instruction from the gamer pr ompts a trigger and so on with other triggers – a chain reaction of triggers. The editor of Warrant maps and game customs has really surpassed all other forms of game editor in the sense that even novice mapmakers can understand and can easily get along. No wonder why Ells have given up so much inspiration to custom Warrant games the way we wanted to, and customize the map that we always want to play to – the DATA Alistair. So before Iceberg customized the most popular version of DATA Alistair, before Guising updated DATA into Alistair, and before Ells created the DATA custom game, the Blizzard programmers had already handed down to us this great World Editor to kick that creativeness out of gamers lawful minds. Warrant, in general, and DATA Alistair, in particular, may not be this dynamic without the World Editor's provision to enrich the game itself in the farthest way Blizzard could have imagined. The History of Data Much of Defense of the Ancient's gamely stems from inspirations from the Neon of Strife map, available for both Statecraft and Warrant 3.Neon of Strife, also known as ASS, is a modified map that pioneered the concept of players choosing a single hero for the collective objective of destroying the opposing team's base (relatively a new concept for ARTS games). To accomplish this goal, players employ a myriad of strategies based on teamwork and competitive play. Ass-type maps may include many differing features and functions to increase the level of competitive play (I. E. Items that give power, towers that alter gamely, and objectives that win the game).Defense of the Ancient was originally created for Warrant Ill: Reign of Chaos by lead programmer Lull up until the release of Warrant Ill: The Frozen Throne. Lull did not continue development onto The Frozen Throne; and instead, made the map open source before officially shutting down development. In the following days/weeks of Eel's absence, many different variations of Data began t o pop-up including: Data Darkness Falls Data Chaos Data All-stars *other variations exist, but the chronological order is as of yet unconfirmed. From the sea of selection, however, Data All-stars became the most popular version, and is still the most widely played map today. Balancing Studies and DATA The more you excel in Data, the more you flunk at school. -not true. Improving in Data is not all about playing 10 or more games per day. Players improve by how well they learn after winning or losing a game (most of the time in losing). Players who are hard headed and don't believe that they lost because what they are doing is wrong, will never be a better player. The best way to balance studies and Data is having strategies for both. These strategies are the things you're going to think of on how you're going to improve quickly. 1. Pay attention at school. Most players are spending all night playing Data and still daydream about Data when it's school time. You have to focus on what you 're doing at the moment. If you are in the classroom, listen, take notes, do your seat works. Forget anything else unrelated to your studies. . Play moderately. Do not exhaust yourself too much to avoid getting dizzy at school in the morning or worst getting absent/late. Also, you have to reserve energy to study for announced/unannounced quizzes. . Pay attention at your game. When it's playtime, play wisely. Use your limited time to the fullest. 2 or 3 games every afternoon are enough to be a great player after 1 or 2 months. You have to focus on your strengths and weaknesses. Develop your strengths and convert your weaknesses to strengths. 4. Observe the factors that affect your studies. If you find it hard to study after laying, you should study first before playing. In my case, I find it hard to study after losing therefore I used Data as a reward after studying. 5. Know when not to play. Be the master of your own body.If you have a report on the following day or an examination, chances are you need more time for that. You have to sacrifice playing which is not and shouldn't be your priority. 6. Don't mind the insults. If you are insulted for being a weak player, don't be offended causing you to play more hours trying to prove to them that you are a great player. Be offended if you're scolded by your teacher for not doing a simple emperor because of playing all night. 7. Cutting-class is a drug. You try it once, you'll get addicted. Never cut-class if you want to graduate on time. 8. Know when to quit.Know when Data cannot be included in your schedule anymore. For example, in my case, I have to do advance reading and projects. I gave up playing competitive Data and Just play whenever I'm free (twice or thrice a week). Now that I am a lot busier, I'm going to update my blob twice per week instead of everyday. Just like any sport, Data shouldn't be treated as a priority. Play it for fun and play it moderately. Rules in Data Like any other games Data itself ha s its rules. 1. Leaving a game or the use of hacks will result in a ban. 2. If either team has less than 4 people remaining, you may leave without a ban.If the opponents are down one player, and you want to leave to make it even, all allies must agree to it in ALL chat.. 3. Forfeit is allowed after 50 minutes have past and your entire team agrees in all chat by saying â€Å"IF† or â€Å"forfeit†. In a vi, the team of 4 can forfeit after 30 minutes. 4. Remake is allowed if 6 or more players agree (at least 2 from each team). Remake is also allowed if someone leaves in the first 15 minutes ND 3 or more people agree to remake within the next 2 minutes. 5. Going AFC frequently or for long periods may result in a ban. 6.Intentional game ruining things like item stealing from allies and creep blocking are bankable. 7. You may not telephoto into an enemy base without your creeps there, any other backcombing IS allowed. 8. Racism or extreme trash talking may result in a report for review by a neutral moderator. 9. Swapping players without their consent is bankable Data Heroes Karakul, Troll Warlord He has gar attack strength after crisis level 6 provided correct items are chosen. Troll is best hero in data because of his matter bash and attack speed he he very strong skills and perfect item definitely and offense.Tracer, the Drown Ranger Very easy to use yet very strong AS. The best killer data. For attack his third skill for stun. And 5 sec chromo to kill INTO hero. Lustful, Auras Warrior Using his artichoke along with overpower really makes us ‘godlike'. Enrage also gets him on top of all the heroes of dot A.Provide him with the abyssal blade, a Shiva's guard and the loather's educe and rest leave to him. His awesome speed can also make a difference. For me bungalow, electrotype is best for me, because even you did not give inventory to him, he still powerful†¦ From bon BUNGALOW CAN BEAT ANYONE Seven, the Rogue Knight Strongest melee heroes, his God Strength beat everything and when the enemy runs†¦ Say hello to Storm Bolt. Seven got the God's Strength no one can beat him with God's Strength even troll he Just go get basher and make for troll he is Tank, Hitter, Stunner, Runner (war cry) and what? s then dagger then stun then hit rampage. Brachium, Spirit Breaker Fast runner and good for the team and wear madness With Mask of madness, power threads and crystals you will be able to make a kill in 4 seconds. Brachium is an awesome hero and with proper items he is unstoppable. Coo he runs fast sometimes it cool. Carded Sharpe, Dwarves Sniper Just try it with an item build of gangs and hash, butterfly, burial-do-Kenyon, monkey inning bar, heart of treasure and power threads. Carded is the best in long range appearance.I know that he is weak, but he can also finish the Job. That's why I chose him than drown ranger and I want you all to use carded because he as great skills (especially by his last skill) and I now he is slow at speed. Fragile yet very strong and precise as the name suggests. He's easy to play as but hard to master. Only a true DATA player can use him at his fullest potential. My advice is to HIT fast and HIT hard. Be Polite. Be Efficient. Be Professional. Never Kill Steal. There are both advantages and disadvantages for them. Let's talk about the advantages iris.As one of the most playable games online, Data can make the players become alert in the mental. They will also turn to be strategic and cooperative. Through computing the magic, damages, gold, physical reduction present and the other stuff, they will get more lore in mathematics. Thus, the youth can get benefits from playing Data. However, not only does the game has advantages, it can also generate the bad effects. It is said that the body system will be weakened. The way the young people think along with their mind will be corrupted. They will not take the money and moral values seriously in life.Heroes in the game often use powerful units. They also have allied heroes and AAA-controlled fighters called â€Å"creeps† who can offer the assistance. Over the mission, gamers are required to purchase the equipment with gold. They have to level up their hero. It may lead them to irresponsibility if they cannot control themselves to deal with time management and priority. They will become lazier and forget the studies. Owing to the game, they may also break the relationships with the family members. What's worse, they will lose their temper and values by the foul languages alike â€Å"Trash talks†.The triggers always exist potentially. More money will be wasted if they cannot stop playing the game. Although the game is funny, you cannot be too addicted. Self-control is extremely important in the modern times. DATA Advantages 1 . Data helps the youth who are playing this game to become mentally alert, cooperative, and strategic. 2. It increases their knowledge in mathematics by computing the gold's, damages, magic and physical reduction present in the game. 3. 9. Girl Interrupted is a movie directed by James Mangold. Mental illness is a serious issue, that is portrayed in this film. It harps on the struggles of mental illness between teenage women. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "What Girl, Interrupted Taught Me About Mental Health" essay for you Create order Susanna Kaysen, an 18 year old teenage girl was instated into a psychiatric center known as Claymoore after trying to commit suicide for an unknown reason. When she first appeared in this facility, she met many other girls with their own issues. Susanna grew up with not too many friends, especially those that were girls. She soon became very close to the ones she had recently met. One of her best friends was Lisa, who was recognized as a sociopath and in Claymoore for eight years. She had a very strong psychological hold on everyone in the center, including Susanna. Lisa constantly started trouble whether it be with the girls, or escaping the center. Other friends of Susanna were Georgina (suffers from depression and compulsive lying disorder), Daisy (compulsive eating disorder), and Polly (schizophrenia). Throughout the movie, Susanna soon learns that she has borderline personality disorder. She did not take this information lightly, and ended up leaving the ward with Lisa. Once ret urning, after seeing that Daisy committed suicide, she turned a new leaf. Susanna had hope given from her doctor Valerie expressing that she could leave if she works hard enough and opens up. Susanna ended up writing about how she felt everyday in a journal. At the end of the movie, she stuck up for herself against Lisa and got out of the psychiatric center after only one year. Overall, this film focused on the emotions of the characters and life in the ward. Critics had a substantial amount to say towards Girl Interrupted. Some critics explained how the main actresses Winona Ryder (Susanna) and Angelina Jolie (Lisa) were outstanding in their performance. Angelina Jolie was also nominated and won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in this movie. A critic explained that if youve ever questioned your own sanity or escaped periods of exceptional melancholy in your life, this film is certain to trigger old fears. But it is also certain to remind you how exquisite and simple salvation can often be(Girl Interrupted 1999, 2000). Girl Interrupted is a prime example of an existential reality. Characters throughout the entire film go through mortality, freedom, isolation, and meaning. Susanna represents the idea of mortality by repressing her thoughts, in addition to Daisy commiting suicide towards the end of the film. Susanna finds freedom in herself when she sticks up to Lisa, while isolation is represented by many of the girls because of their mental illness. Susanna felt very lonely before meeting the girls in the psychiatric ward. She eventually finds meaning in her life once realizing that she can be okay, especially if she expresses her thoughts. This film made the audience understand how hard and confusing life can be for people with mental illness, and to be grateful for what you have in your life. Dealing with the cinematography of this film, the creators provided an amazing tone using colors and shadows of lighting in the night time scenes. The use of these shadows are expressive of the feeling of tension and tragedy (Meadows, 2000).The lighting not only gives the audience a certain feeling, but also lets the audience form opinions based off of the characters shown. Another example of how light was used, is when it lead to foreshadowing. Lisa and Susanna are in Daisys house and Lisa is emotionally attacking Daisy. As Daisy walks up the stairs of her house, an abundance of light is seen to be at the top, which sets the tone for the next scene in which Susanna finds Daisy dead (Harley and Lancaster, 2014). The bright light expresses heaven and God, especially since it is at the top of the steps, in which God is above us just like where the light was coming from. Lighting is also represented dealing with Susanna as a character. At first she was basically considered the underdog, plus she was the one holding in all her thoughts and emotions, so the lighting surrounding her was very dark and shadowy. In the end of the film, the lighting is a lot brighter on Susanna because she finally was able to express her emotions. Another example of cinematography is based off of the camera angles. The camera is constantly zooming in on the faces of many of the characters in the film, because this part of the body is very vulnerable especially in situations such as when Susanna was speaking to her therapist, or when Susanna was comforting Lisa (Harley and Lancaster, 2014). The theme of this movie , in addition to the cinematography allows for the portrayal of the overall message illustrating the ideas that people tend to hold onto their feelings instead of expressing them and letting go. The film raises attention to the element of self reflection. Throughout Girl Interrupted, there were a ton of psychological and mental issues/disorders portrayed by the cast. Susanna had bipolar disorder, while Lisa had antisocial personality disorder. Georgina (Susannas roommate) also had depression and compulsive lying disorder. Claymoore was filled with teenage girls with mental illnesses, who were in desperate need of help. The film tries to portray the emotions and actions of people with specific mental disorders. Research is being conducted still to this day on trying to understand the characteristics, symptoms and results of patients with psychological and mental problems. Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness usually represented by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and/or behaviors. People who are diagnosed as bipolar tend to experience intense episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety. Some symptoms would be abrupt, dangerous behaviors, and self-harming behaviors, in addition to highly changeable moods (Borderline Personality Disorder, 2017) Research had been conducted in 2005 based off of borderline personality disorder. In some young adults it may be hard distinguishing unipolar and bipolar depression from borderline personality disorder. Unipolar depression is characterized primarily from sadness and lack of interest, while bipolar depression is based off of manic episodes and extreme mood swings. The main goal for this research was to measure the borderline characteristics between three different participation groups. Each young adult participating was dealing currently with major depression. They each had to complet e borderline questions, in addition to a diagnostic exam. The research concluded that groups that were bipolar depressed had significantly higher median levels of borderline characteristics than unipolar. Some of these characteristics were the thought and attempt of suicide, having angry outbursts, and/or giving into aggressive urges. With this research, clinicians will be able to differentiate between bipolar depression and unipolar depression in young adults (Smith et al. 2005) In 2016, more research was conducted on the effects and symptoms of BPD. The objective was to characterize the emotional experiences both positive and negative in young adults with BPD. Participants were assigned to complete a clinical review for researchers to assess their borderline personality disorder symptoms. Once this was done, for two weeks, researchers measured the positive and negative emotions of their participants. The results that were found were that borderline personality disorder revealed an increase in negative emotions, but positive emotions had not decreased. When characterizing the emotional experiences of these young adults with BPD, these individuals are most commonly distinguished by their heightened negative emotional experiences (Chu et al. 2016). From the film, Susanna portrays similar characteristics as the participants used in the research above that distinguishes her as someone diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. In the first study, it was found that some characteristics were the thought and attempt of suicide, outbursts, and/or giving into aggressive urges (Smith et al. 2005). Susanna in the beginning of the film attempted suicide by drinking vodka and overdosing on aspirins. Then once in the psychiatric ward, she had her own rude outbursts when she didnt understand why she was there or how to fix how she was feeling mentally. Also Susanna provided evidence of promiscuity and extreme attachment. The research done in 2016 explained that borderline personality disorder revealed an increase in negative emotions (Chu et al. 2016). With this being said, Susanna sank into deep depression once Lisa gets sent into another ward. Susanna became very rude as well. Susanna (Winona Ryder) portrays borderline personality di sorder very well in this film. Antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) is a mental condition, defined as when a person shows no regard for right and wrong, they tend to ignore the feelings and rights of others. People who have sociopathy manipulate and antagonize people within their situations feeling no guilt for their behavior. Some symptoms include disregard for what is right and wrong, consistent lying, manipulation of others, arrogance, violation of laws, lack of empathy, unnecessary risk taking, etc. (Antisocial personality disorder, 2017). Studies have shown that people who have ASPD have deficits mentally in areas associated with brain control and functioning. Research was conducted for a review to try and control the symptoms that come with this disorder. Researchers believed the use of meditation may have potential effectiveness on the brain. Clinical evidence was reviewed giving preliminary support of meditation reducing ASPD symptoms. Researchers used specific framework consisting of the forebrai n, midbrain, hindbrain, and limbic system to be able to provide evidence that meditative interventions increase brain functioning and control. With the increase in empathic functioning and inhibitory control, symptoms of antisocial personality disorder were noticed to decrease (Holthouser and Bui, 2015). Another research had been conducted dealing with people in treatment for substance use who have antisocial personality disorder. In this research, a randomized trial was conducted assessing for self rated help on participants who had antisocial personality disorder, in addition to substance abuse during month three, nine, and fifteen. Psychoeducation was used, which is defined as a process of providing educational information to those seeking or receiving mental health services. The results concluded that brief psychoeducation increased participants self rated help for antisocial personality disorder was associated with more days abstinent and higher treatment satisfaction. There was also a reduced risk of dropping out after month three (Thylstrup et al. 2017). In Girl Interrupted, the second Lisa stepped foot into the clinical, you noticed a drop in many of the young womens faces. Lisa was a diagnosed as a sociopath, which is medically known as antisocial personality disorder. She was the center of attention, in addition to constantly getting herself into trouble. Throughout the entire film, Lisa was either escaping from the hospital, or manipulating some of the women at Claymoore. As stated in the research conducted about antisocial personality disorder, patients have symptoms consisting of a disregard for what is right and wrong, manipulation of others, antagonization, etc (Antisocial personality disorder, 2017). One prime example of when Lisa (Angelina Jolie) perfectly portrayed antisocial personality disorder was when she visited Daisy at her home with Susanna. Lisa screamed at Daisy explaining how she has sexual attractions to her father, in addition to calling Daisy obese. Daisy was mentally ill with a compulsive eating disorder. Th e next morning, Susanna found Daisy dead because of suicide. Lisa led Daisy to kill herself with all the hateful and manipulating words she had said the night before. Once realizing Daisy was dead, Lisa stole her money and left with no remorse. Any sane person would have been in shock, in addition to feeling anxiety and sadness in that moment, but Lisa did not. Depression is a serious medical condition that negatively affects how you feel, act, and the way in which you think. Some symptoms consist of feeling sad, loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite, trouble sleeping, and loss of energy (Parekh, 2017). On the other hand, compulsive lying disorder is commonly defined as a medical issue when lies on a regular basis and is unable to control their lying despite of foreseeing inevitable negative consequences or ultimate disclosure of the lie (Parekh, 2017). A study was conducted to try and understand individuals use of self-statements reflecting self-criticism, and low self-worth. These statements tend to be linked to the incidence, severity, and recurrence of major depressive disorder. Self-talk in early and late therapy sessions were examined. Researchers had identified changes at the end of treatment, and used hierarchical multiple regression to examine whether improvements in patient self-talk influenc ed treatment outcome. The results concluded that the trends provided indicated that patients used friendlier and less critical self-statements at the end of treatment. Also, a decrease in self-critical behavior was associated with fewer symptoms towards the end of treatment. Self acceptance had increased as well towards the end of treatment (Thompson et al. 2018). In other words, a study had been conducted based on the idea of compulsive lying disorder in 2016. The cognitive view on deception holds that lying typically requires additional mental effort as compared to truth telling. Psychopathy, however, has been associated with compulsive lying. In this research, the participants consisted of fifty-two offenders, in which deception paradigm was included in the trials with the free choice to lie or to tell the truth. The primary analyses involved correlations between psychopathy, the ease of lying, and the frequency of lying. The results concluded that since the participants preferred truth telling over lying, leads to the support of the cognitive theory of lying. It has been proven that when people are offered the option to perform one of two tasks, they typically prefer the easier task above the more difficult one. Clinically, it is interesting that manipulative offenders chose to lie in spite of probable negative consequences, which points to compulsive lying disorder (Verschuere and Hout, 2016). Depression and compulsive lying disorder were one of the last most prevalent mental illnesses during this film. Georgina was the first person Susanna met as she arrived at Claymoore. Georgina ends up becoming Susannas roommate, but seems pretty normal. Throughout the film, she had been pretty calm, but showed some traits, that provided clues expressing her psychological disorders. As stated in the research, Georgina followed the symptoms explained, such as her loss of appetite and her trouble sleeping to portray examples of her depressive disorder. The first time Susanna met Georgina, she explained herself by sharing her psychological disorder known as compulsive lying disorder. No one really knew when she was telling the truth or when she was lying. Susanna realized towards the end of the film that Georgina only lies to the people she fears. Girl Interrupted was overall a very interesting and entertaining film. It harps on the struggles of mental illness between teenage women. Susanna Kaysen, an 18 year old teenage girl was instated into a psychiatric center known as Claymoore after trying to commit suicide for an unknown reason. She soon became very close to the girls she had recently met, such as Lisa, who was recognized as a sociopath, Georgina (suffers from depression and compulsive lying disorder), Daisy (compulsive eating disorder), and Polly (schizophrenia). Throughout the movie, Susanna soon learns that she has borderline personality disorder. In the end, Susanna moves out of the Claymoore house because she finally allowed herself to open up and express her feeling and emotions to others, instead of keeping them bottled up inside. The cinematography of the film consisted of lighting changes and different camera angles/techniques to portray certain emotions from the audience. Girl Interrupted allowed for the audie nce to better understand mental illnesses in todays society. With this being said, researchers are still looking for treatments and will continue in search of bettering the symptoms of these psychological disorders. Works Cited Antisocial personality disorder.
